يتناول الكتاب نص أدبي تهجيني، مفتوح على الشعر، والسرد، والنثر الفني، عابر للأنواع، يفتقد إلى البنية الصوتية الكمية المنظمة، لكنه يمتلك إيقاعا داخليا غير منتظم، من خلال توزيع (علامات الترقيم)، و(البنية الدلالية)، المركبة على بنية التضاد، و(جدلية العلاقات) في النص، التي تخلق الإيقاع الخفي، فهي (أي قصيدة النثر)، نوع أدبي مستقل ينتمي إلى جنس الحافة، وله (ذاكرة) في التراث العربي، تتمثل بالقراءة الصامتة. ويرجح كثيرون أن (قصيدة النثر العربية) ولدت بتأثير (الترجمة عن الفرنسية والإنجليزية)، ويرى البعض أنها منقطعة عن التراث العربي. ولقصيدة النثر شكلان، (الشكل السطري)، و(شكل الفقرة النثرية العادية). أما (درجات الشاعرية) في قصيدة النثر، فهي تتراوح مثل أي نوع أدبي بين (علو الشاعرية) لدى كتّابها الكبار، و(ضعف الشاعرية) لدى الناشئة، و(الشاعرية الوسطى) لدى الغالبية.
