ليست وظيفة هذا الكتابة الصغير تقديم تاريخ شامل للقهوة، وبالنظر إلى حجمه، فهو لا يمثل مرجعية أو سلطة على الموضوع المطروح اعتبروا هذا الكتاب مقدمة وجيزة ومسلية (آمل ذلك) لرحلة القهوة من أصولها المتواضعة في شمال إفريقيا قبل ألفية من اليوم، وحتى يومنا هذا، إذ تشكل ظاهرة عالمية يستمتع الناس حول العالم بشربها يقال إن القهوة هي السلعة الأكثر تداولا ومتاجرة بعد النفط على كوكب الأرض، وعلى الرغم من عدم صحة هذه المقولة، إلا أن القهوة وبدون أدنى شك سلعة ذات أهمية عالمية حسب مركز التجارة الدولية، فإن القهوة أكثر انتشارا من الشاي، حيث تبلغ مبيعاتها سبعة أضعاف الشاي، وتحصد لنفسها مكانا ودرجة راقية بجانب المواد المخدرة الأخرى (الشرعية) مثل النبيذ والدخان ونوعا ما الشوكولاتة ومقارنة بعمر الحضارة البشرية، فإن اكتشاف [مشروب] القهوة كان متأخرا بالنظر إلى باقي الاكتشافات الأخرى.
