التعليم في الهواء الطلق سابق على التعليم بين الجدران، ولطالما كانت حلقات العلم القديمة التي ابتكرها الإنسان تحت ظل الأشجار وعلى ضفاف الأنهار، ومع تطور الحياة بدأت المراكز التعليمية تبتعد عن الهواء الطلق لتنظيم العملية التعليمية بعيدا عن ظروف الطقس والعوامل الجوية، ومع ذلك حافظت بعض المدارس على بعض مظاهر الطبيعة بداخلها، كما مكنت التكنولوجيا الحديثة المتعلمين من جلب خبرات الطبيعة ليس فقط إلى مدارسهم بل إلى منازلهم أيضا، وهذه الظاهرة هي جزء من مفهوم يعرف بإنه الطبيعة الكنولوجية، أي التقنيات التي تتوسط وتزيد وتحاكي تجربتنا في العالم الطبيعي بطرق المختلفة كما تم توجيه الاهتمام مع بعض المخاوف في كثير من الأحيان نحو مايسمى بالطبيعة الافتراضية وخاصة تكنولوجيا البيئات الافتراضية.
