يقوم بليخانوف في هذا الكتاب بالرد على ما أطلق عليهم المثاليين، والاشتراكيين الانتهازيين، الذين قاموا بتفسير التاريخ بمناهج مادية، منكرين التفسير المادي الجدلي الماركسي الذي يتبناه ويدافع عنه ؛ فهو يقدم في هذا الكتاب ردا قاطعا على آراء المثاليين الألمان، والماديين الفرنسيين، ويعتبر أن أحدا منهم لم يقترب مما يعتبره الماركسيون التفسير المادي للتاريخ، وإنما ترك الأمر في خانات الرأي والطبيعة. يضع بليخانوف منهجية للرد على ناقدي المادية التاريخية، بدءا من مفهوم التطور وعالم الأفكار المثالية، صعودا إلى الثورة الصناعية وتصحيح المفاهيم الهيجلية، ويختتم كتابه بوضعه شرحا مفسرا للماركسية ودورها في تفسير التاريخ بشكل علمي ؛ يعد الكتاب بالنسبة إلى \"لينين\" أحد الركائز في الفكر الشيوعي والماركسية.
