تحكي الرواية عن حقبة زمنية في السودان القديم إبان الغزو التركي المصري، وهي قريبة الشبه من (شوق الدرويش) لحموري زيادة التي تحكي عن المهدية حركة التحرر الثورية التي قادها الدراويش أعداء التحديث، لكن البحر يعرف أكثر تبدو بالضد من شوق الدرويش فهي منحازة للعادات والتقاليد والتراث مرتبطة عاطفيا بالمكان (الحلفاي) (العيلفون) (شندي) (سنار) وباقتدار شديد استطاع المؤلف أن ينقل صور المكان إلى سطوره بشكل عميق ودقيق. نقلنا المؤلف بجدارة إلى لحظات تاريخية لا تزال آثارها راسخة في الوجدان العام السوداني، فحملة للدفتر دار الانتقامية التي قتلت آلافا من النفوس البريئة في عامة البلاد، وغزو الأتراك مستعينين بالمرتزقة من دول عربية وأفريقية وأوربية للسودان من أجل جلب الرقيق والعاج والذهب، استطاع الشيخ إدريس تصويرها حية دون ضبابية ودون تحيز لموقف تاريخي ضد آخر.
