إن البارابسيكولوجي دراسة علمية تعنى بالظواهر والأحداث الغريبة فتحاول شرحها بشكل علمي منطقي عقلاني وواضح. إنها تفسر ما لا تفسره البسيكولوجيا العادية الكلاسيكية فتغوص في تحليل الغريب والعجيب فتعلله تعليلا كاملا مقبولا لكي تظهره أنه من قوى الإنسان المجهولة. وهذا الذي يبدو للوهلة الأولى خارقا أو معجزة يصبح في متناول العقل والمنطق. وإذا كان مجال بحثنا واسعا إلى ها الحد فإننا لن نضيع في متاهات هذه العلوم بل سنقتصر في هذا البحث على مسألة التنويم المغناطيسي. وسنحاول في هذه لدراسة أن نثبت أن التنويم علم له جذوره العميقة في تاريخ البشرية وله أصوله ومبادئه. وهو في الوقت نفسه فن لا يستطيع أن يكتسبه الإنسان عن طريق التحصيل وطالما أن التنويم فن فقد ينقلب إلى شعوذة إذا مارسه فنان تخلى عن مبادئ الخير والحق وما به عن الغاية الأساسية.
