كتب الإمام أحمد بن محمد بن حنبل هذه الرسالة، إلى قوم صلى معهم فرآهم يسيئون في صلاتهم، فقام بما فرض على العالم من تعليم الجاهل، ومن الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر، ومن التعاون على البر والتقوى، فجزاه الله عنا وعنهم خير. فإذا كان هذا على عهده رضى الله عنه، فأننا في زماننا هذا أحوج، والناس إلى الاستخفاف والاستهانة في زماننا أقرب من الذين كتبا إليهم وأنكر عليهم. وليعلم امرؤ أن صلاته إذا بطل بطل عمله كله، وأنه إذا استهان بشيء مما فيها، استهان الله به وأن إقامة الصلاة على وجهها أصل في إقامة الدين كله على وجهه.
