هذا الكتاب أثر من آثارنا القديمة، يرجع إلى الربع الأول من القرن الثالث الهجري فما قبله، نجد منه سمات في بعض المؤلفات القديمة، ككتاب نصر بن عبد الرحمن الإسكندري الفزاري، وكتاب الزمخشري، ومعجم البلدان للحموي، ولكننا لا نجده كاملا إلا في هذا الكتاب الذي تحاول أن نقدمه كاملا.
