يحاول الباحث فتحي المسكيني في هذا الكتاب بلورة مفهوم الإيمان الحر بوصفه ورشة تأويلية وليس عقيدة جاهزة. وأنه لا تخلو ثقافة من عناصر الإيمان الحر. وأن قراء التراث ليسوا جاهزين بعد للإيمان الحر، محاولا إبراز فكرة أن علاقتنا بمصادر أنفسنا لم تعد فقهية بل صارت تتعلق بنموذج العيش الذي تقترحه علينا. حاول الباحث من خلال هذا الكتاب إنكار وجود ملة جاهزة علينا الانتماء إليها بل فقط نحن نتوفر على أفق أخلاقي متميز علينا إعادة اختراعه بشكل حر. مستنتجا فكرة أنه لا فضل لثقافة على أخرى إلا بما تسمح به للأفراد من تجارب الإيمان الحر مهما كان موضوع الإيمان.
