إن البراعة المطلوبة لدى المحرر الصحفي، تتمثل في تحرير النص الصحفي، وتحرير العنوان الصحفي، والتاكيد من دقة المعلومات التي تتضمنها النصوص الصحفية، والالتزلم بسياسة الصحفي، والايديولوجية التي تعتمدها، وسلامة الحكم على القضايا المبحوثة داخل النص، وسلامة المنطق في تناول الاحداث التي يقوم الكاتب بتحليلها، ومراعاة المصلحة العامة والمصالح العليا للبلد الذي ينتمي اليه الكاتب. إضافة الى المقدرة الاقناعية لدى الكاتب وهو يعرض أفكاره إزاء الأحداث. خصوصا، وأن الكتالبة الصحفية تعبر عن مدى امتلاك الكاتب للقدرات الابداعية، ومدى التمكن من اللغة العربية وقواعدها، نحوها وصرفها ودلالات المعاني والألفاظ فيها. ناهيك عن الفهم العميق للفنون الصحفية ومستويات الأداء اللغوي فيها، والقدرة على معرفة متطلبات الخطاب الصحفي، الهادف الى التوجة الى الرأي العام، مشاركة وتأثيرا في القضايا المحورية التي يهتم بها.
