الكتاب يتناول فترة من أدق فترات التاريخ وأهمها، وهي الفترة الممتدة من سنة 1510 إلى سنة 1850، أي العهد التركي الأول وعهد الأسرة القره مانلية وأوائل العهد التركي الثاني ؛ وتأتي أهمية هذه الفترة التاريخية من أنها شهدت مولد الأطماع الاستعمارية وتفتحت فيها عيون أوروبا على الوطن العربي، كما أنها تمثل الجولة الأخيرة المريرة في الصراع بين آخر معاقل الحضارة الإسلامية، وبين مناوئيها الذين تربصوا بها الدوائر قرونا طويلة وأرادوا خنقها منذ الحرب الصليبية الأولى.
