يعتبر الكاتب أن الفن في جوهره، ومنذ نشأته الأولى، كان تعبيرا عن كليات وجودية : وجود الأن في مواجهة وجود العالم، وجود الحياة مقابل وجود الموت، وجود الخير أمام وجود الشر، وجود الزمن في ارتباطه بالمطلق، وعلى امتداد الدورات الحضارية لم يجعل الفن إلا نادرا جدا بالتعبير عن الذات في مواجهة الآخر، ذلك أنه كان معنيا بالكشف عن «الما وراء» أكثر مما هو آني وعرضي وشخصي في العلاقات الاجتماعية، وربما كان لارتباط الفن بالدين، على امتداد هذه الدورات الحضارية، ثم بالنظم الشمولية المهيمنة طبقية كانت أو استعمارية أو ملكية أو ثيوقراطية أو أيديولوجية، لذا كان لهذا الارتباط تأثيره في تكريس تلك النظرة الكلية.
