Overview
ينقل لنا الراوي وهو أحد تلامذة الطبيب الألماني (مارتن هاسيلياس) الخطابات والمحادثات بين (هاسيلياس) وأحد أصدقائه (فان لو) عن حالة الكاهن (جينينجز). تخيل معي أن هناك كاهن الذي من المفترض أن يطرد من الناس مخاوفهم، لا يستطيع مواجهة مخاوفه فعندما كان الكاهن بصدد قراءة بعض الدراسات في الميتافيزيقا الدينية للحضارات القديمة ظهر له من العدم قرد أسود بعيون حمراء شيطانية يطارده في كل مكان ولا يراه أحد غيره وقد وصل الأمر إلى أن يوسوس إلى الكاهن بأبشع الجرائم والمحرمات، يقع الطبيب والكاهن في طريق بعضهما عن طريق المعارف ولأن (هاسيلياس) رجل لا يخشى النظر أبعد من المادة، فقد وجد الكاهن غايته معه فحكى له حكايته المؤلمة ليعرف (هاسيلياس) السبب في كل ذلك.
