هذا الكتاب كتاب ذو طراز فريد من الأدب الديني تشعر فيه أنك أمام كتاب حديث رغم مضي تسعة قرون على إخراجه ؛ فالكتاب يعد من أفضل الكتب التي ألفت في بابه، وإطلالة على بغداد في أواخر العصر العباسي الذي عاينه الكاتب ؛ هو كتاب جمع فيه ابن الجوزي الخواطر التي كانت تدور في خلده في أثناء تأليفه للكتب، وتدور هذه الخواطر حول موضوعات مختلفة وتتحدث في أمور عديدة ومتنوعة من شؤون الحياة الدنيا والآخرة، وفي الكتاب حث ودعوة إلى الزهد وتزكية النفوس من كل ما يشوبها من أمر الدنيا، مع الحفاظ على توازن النفس والانتباه لأمر الدنيا في حدود ما أباحه الله لها، والاستعانة بكل ذلك على المضي نحو الآخرة ؛ مجموعة من التأملات الحكيمة والأفكار المتفردة والخواطر السابحة في الكون والحياة الأحياء والوجود ويقدم نصائح وإرشادات من خلال تجاربه الشخصية وسيرته الذاتية فيها الموعظة والعقل والدين والمشاعر.
