يتناول الإمام الشاطبي في مصنفه هذا موضوع البدعة. وقد جعل مباحث ما كتبه في عشرة أبواب جاءت عناوينها على التوالي : 1-تعريف البدع ومعناها. 2-ذم البدع في سوء منقلب أهلها. 3-في أن ذم البدع والمحادثات عام، وفيه الكلام على شبه المبتدعة ومن جعل البدع حسنة وسيئة. 4-في مأخذ أهل البدع في الاستدلال. 5-في البدع الحقيقية والإضافية، والفرق بينهما. 6-في أحكام البدع وأنها ليست على رتبة واحدة. 7-في الابتداع يختص في العبادات، أم تدخل فيه العادات. 8-في الفرق بين البدع والمصالح المرسلة والاستحسان. 9-في السبب الذي لأجله افترقت فرق المبتدعة عن جماعة المسلمين. 10-في الصراط المستقيم الذي انحرفت عنه المبتدعة.
