في هذا الكتاب يتناول طه حسين حياة بعض من الصحابة رضوان الله عليهم الذين كانوا من المستضعفين قبل الإسلام وعندما أعلنوا إسلامهم زاد استضعافهم وكيد المشركين لهم. ويحاول الكتاب سرد صبرهم وتحملهم للأذى والمعاناة في سبيل الإيمان الذي وقر في قلوبهم. ويحاول الكاتب في هذا الكتاب تسليط الضوء على ما أحدثه الإيمان في قلوب وعقول هؤلاء الصحابة الذين كانوا مستضعفين لكن كيف تغير حالهم وتغيرت حياتهم فأصبحوا من الأسماء التي خلدها الزمن إلى يومنا هذا وكيف اصبحوا أعزة بعد ذل وأقوياء بعد ضعف
