\"Although none will deny that Yi Sang-hwa (1901-1943) was an important figure in the evolution of modern Korean poetry, it is a pity that the textual transmission of the extant poems has been so precarious that there are quite a few textual discrepancies between the editions published so far. Due to the textual corruption and the precarious and unstable textual transmission, the existing texts of his poems are rather unsettled and unreliable. Several scholars have tried to establish an authoritative text of his poetry. But no authoritative text exists. In translating Yi Sanghwa's poems, therefore, I had to assume the role of a textual critic, because there are several variant readings of his lines; and it is wholly up to the discretion and critical acumen of a textual critic to choose from the variant words that appear in the editions published so far. Of the four major editions published so far, the first one, published in 1987, contains the texts of the poems as they were initially printed in odd journals; therefore, the book is more geared to satisfying the antiquarian interest of the textual critics. The other three editions, published in 1991, 1998, and 2001, respectively, reflect the opinions of the editors; and, due to the occasional discrepancies in establishing their respective texts, a translator must exert his own critical acumen to choose his preferred reading.
