إن استراتيجية التفكير النقدي عند كانط في حقول المعرفة بدأت من خلال تحليل قدرات الذهن المعرفية، فالمسألة إذن تدور حول إمكان تلقي الموضوع ومعرفته ومن ثمة تعقل هذه المعرفة، وكل ذلك قبليا (أي بحثا في العقل نفسه لا في موضوعاته، إلا أنه لن يكون بحثا في الشروط السيكولوجية، أو في عوائق المعرفة العلمية، ولا تأريخا للمذاهب الفلسفية، ولا حتى إنشاء لميتافيزيقا جديدة، بل سيكون نقداً للملكة المعرفية ؛ أي تعيينا لشروط إمكان المعرفة القبيلة ومبادىء هذا الإمكان ونطاقه، فليس النقد هاهنا عند كانط نقدا للكتب أو المذاهب الفلسفية والتاريخية، بل نقدا لملكة المعرفة، ألا وهي العقل.
