يتناول العمل مقتطفات موجزة عن سيرة الشاعر الأدبية وحياته، وجعلها المؤلف في بداية الديوان تيسيرا على أي بحث لاحق يتناول شعر هذا الشاعر الكبير. وقد حذف من الطبعة القديمة للديوان ما جاء في الصفحات الأخيرة منها حول المراثي النثرية والشعرية التي قيلت في حق الشاعر، لأنه لم يجد لها أهمية كبيرة في الدراسات الأدبية، النقدية والتحليلية، التي تخصه. كما حذف عدة مقالات نثرية للشاعر، لأن هدفه كان استفراد قصائده فقط.
