ينظر هذا الكتاب إلى الترابط الذي ينطوي عليه عنوانه (الأفكار والأسلوب) من زوايا مختلفة يتجلى في الكشف الملموس للمقولات النظرية الأساسية وفي الفهم البلاغي للكلمة وهو يدرس أسلوب النثر الفني في فصول خاصة عن غوته وبوشكين وبلزاك ودستويفسكي و ل. تولستوي وتشيخوف وهو يعنى ببيان الرابطة التي تجمع بين مشاكل الأسلوب ومشاكل الجنس الأدبي، (وتغدو قضية الرواية الموضوع المباشر للكتاب برمته لا سيما من الناحية التاريخية) وهو على أية حال، لا يتوقف عند هذه الحدود، بل يتعداه إلى دراسة التاريخ المقارن للأدب العالمي، كما يتناول تناولا تعميميا القضايا الرئيسة لمعنى الاشكال النحوية من الناحية الأسلوبية.
