المسرح مثله مثل كافة الفنون ترجع نشأته إلى السحر، أي إلى محاولة التأثير على الطبيعة بقوة إرادة الإنسان، وإحالة الأفكار إلى أشياء غريبة، وفي الأزمنة الأولى من المسرح كان كل فرد ممثلا، ولا تفرقة بين الممثل وبقية القبيلة، والدنيا هي المسرح ، وكانت منصة التمثيل مكانا مقدسا، وكان الحاضرون نوعين : مؤدين ومريدين، ولا يفصل بين الممثلين والمشاهدين سوى مساحة تخيلية أو معنوية، ويصبح أخيرا حاجزا ماديا محسوسا، وأخيرا أصبح يفصل بين الممثل والمشاهدين آلاف الأميال. ويرجع أصل المسرح في جميع الحضارات إلى احتفالات الطقوس الدينية، والدليل مخطوط لمسرحية دينية مصرية كتبت قبل 2000 ق. م.، وتدور حول أوزوريس وبعثه، وقد نشأت الدراما الإغريقية (وهي الأصل في التأليف المسرحي الغربي) عن الاحتفالات بعبادة الإله ديونيسوس، فكان الناس يضعون أقنعة على وجوههم، يرقصون ويتغنون احتفالا بذكراه.
