كتاب \"مغنيات بغداد\" للكاتب كمال لطيف سالم يتحدث عن حال الغناء عند مجيء العثمانيين واحتلالهم للعراق وتاريخ المسرح الغنائي العراقي في القرن العشرين إضافة إلى مقالات مختصرة عن أهم المغنيات العراقيات في النصف الاول من القرن العشرين. ففي أواخر حكم دولة (الرجل المريض) للعراق ظهرت بوادر تشجيع الطرب والغناء الرخيص المبتذل وتوافدت على بغداد مطربات من كل الجنسيات يقدمن الرقص الغناء الخليع والرخيص الخالي من أي قيمة وصولا إلى عام 1919 الذي حدث فيه حدث فني أسعد كل المهتمين بالفن في العراق.
