يبحث هذا الكتاب في آثار ماري التي تعد من أهم المواقع السورية الرافدية المؤرخة بالمدة الممتدة من مطلع الألف الثالث ق. م. إلى بداية الألف الثاني ق. م. وتمتاز آثارها بكثرتها، وتنوعها، وبانتمائها إلى فترات تاريخية مختلفة، مما جعلها تحمل سمات متنوعة، وبالاطلاع عليها اطلاعا وافيا يمكن للباحث أو القارئ غير المختص أن يحصل على معلومات غزيرة عن نماذج من آثار العالم السوري الرافدي، وبمعنى آخر تمثل آثار ماري ميدانا معرفيا خصبا لكل المختصين بالحضارتين السورية، والرافدية، ولاسيما الذين يبحثون في آثارهما وتاريخهما القديمين. وتنقسم آثارها إلى منقولة (القطع الفنية الصغيرة التي تُعرض في المتاحف)، وغير منقولة (الآثار المعمارية). وتقدم لنا هذه الآثار صورة عن حياة سكانها وفكرهم ومعتقداتهم.
