يشوب حالة التدوين التاريخي في العراق كثير من الغموض بسبب ما أصابه من إغفال أو قلة معرفة من لدن المؤرخين الذين كتبوا عن هذه الحالة لما بعد الاحتلال المغولي لبغداد في منتصف القرن الثالث عشر والحال أن هذه الحقبة الطويلة التي أمتدت لقرون عديدة لم تكن خالية من المؤرخين العراقيين ولكن كثيرا منهم قد ترك العراق وآثر الاستقرار في بلاد الشام ومصر والحجاز وربما وصل المقام ببعضهم إلى اليمن تجنبا للظروف القاسية التي عانى منها المؤرخون والعلماء في مختلف مجالات المعرفة على يد القوى الأجنبية التي وطأت هذه البلاد بحد السيف.
