يتضمن الكتاب سير جمهرة من الأعلام الكبار من علماء الآثار الذين جابوا أطلال المدن القديمة في العراق ونقبوا فيها واستخرجوا نفائسها وصنفوا المئات من الكتب والمعاجم والخرائط والأطالس والمخططات والصور التي تمثل آثار وحضارات العراق القديمة. ومن خلال عملي بدائرة الآثار العراقية منذ عام 1944 ومنقبا في عدد من المواقع العراقية، وعملي سكرتيرا للمجلة الآثارية الشهيرة سومرSUMER، التي تأسست عام 1945، وكتابة عدد من الأبحاث والمقالاتفيها تجمعت لدى مجموعة كبيرة من سير أولئك العلماء والمنقبين الآثاريين وكانوا يمثلون عدة جنسيات فرنسية، إنكليزية، ألمانية، أميركية، إيطالية، دانماركية ويابانية، نشرت طائفة من هذه السير في المجلات والصحف العراقية خلال أكثر من نصف قرن. فاستقامت هذه السير كتابا بعنوان رواد علم الآثار في العراق تعهدت بنشره وطبعه مشكورة مؤسسة الوراق المعروفة بنشرها الكتب والمؤلفات العلمية والثقافية والمعرفية التي تخص العراق والوطن العربي.
