يمكن تعريف تلوث مياه البحار بأنه اختلاط مياه البحر بمجموعة من النفايات والمواد الكيميائية التي تنتقل من اليابسة إليها، ويؤدي هذا التلوث إلى وقوع كثير من الأضرار المختلفة، ومنها : الأضرار البيئية والأضرار الاقتصادية، كما يتسبب في كثير من الأضرار الصحية للكائنات الحية، الجدير بالذكر أن المخلفات البشرية تصل أيضا إلى مياه البحار مما يسهم في تلويثها بشكل كبير ؛ ما يؤدي إلى القضاء على كثير من المواطن التي تسكنها الكائنات البحرية مما يؤدي إلى موتها.
