تعتبر السلاحف الخضراء من السلاحف البحرية كبيرة الحجم حيث يصل طول بعضها إلى متر ونصف... تنتشر هذه السلاحف في المحيطات الأطلسي والمهندي والهادي وفي مياه البحر المتوسط ومياه منطقتنا البحرية وهي تسافر المسافات طويلة وكثيرا ما تعود إلى مواطن تكاثر أصلا فيها خلال فترة حياتها التي تقدر بمائة عام تغذى السلاحف الخضراء على الأعشاب البحرية والقشريات والأسماك الصغيرة وقناديل البحر وغيرها وتتراوح دورة الإنجاب لها ما بين سنتين إلى ثلاث سنوات، حيث تضع السلحفاة ثلاث دفعات من البيض في الدورة الواحدة، وقد تقطع مسافة تصل الى ٦ آلاف كيلو متر بين كل دورة.
