كان الحيوان ولا يزال محط اهتمام من الإنسان العربي ابتداء بعصر ما قبل الإسلام، ومروراً بالعصور الإسلامية المختلفة، وانتهاء بعصرنا الحديث. السؤال الذي يتبادر إلى أذهاننا هو: لماذا هذا التقارب بين الإنسان العربي والحيوان؟ ما سر هذا الالتصاق العاطفي والأدبي؟ لا سيما الإبل والخيول التي أخذت النصيب الأوفر في المصادر العربية، ثم أنت بعض الحيوانات لتأخذ لها مكاناً أكبر ومساحة متسعة في المصادر العربية مثل الطيور التي كانت تتخذ للصيد والقنص واللهو، وما لبث الأدب العربي بعد كتاب كليلة ودمنة أن أخذ من الحيوانات مادة أدبية للتأليف بداية بسهل بن هارون والجاحظ، ووصولاً إلى الوطواط والدميري، حيث كان الحيوان بمختلف أجناسه مادة للتأليف.
