تناول الكتاب أن النزعة التأملية سمة معروفة في ِشعرنا العربي القديم جاهليه وإسلاميه، وهي تدل على مدى ما وصل إليه الفكر العربي في هذه الحقبة الزمنية أو تلك، على أن التأمل في الشعر العربي القديم ل ظاهرة عامة حتى في العصر العباسي الذي اغتنت فيه الثقافة العربية لإمتزاجها لم يكن ليشكِّ بالثقافات الأعجمية من فارسية ويونانية وهندية، ولكن ما يمكن أن يشكل ظاهرة في هذا الباب الشعر الصوفي لأن الصوفيين فلسفتهم في الحياة ونظرتهم الخاصة إلى الخالق والمخلوقات، وهم يكونون ما يشبه مدرسة لها أفكارها وطريقة تعبيرها.
