يتحدث الكتاب على فرضية رئيسة واحدة تدور حولها وهي ما مدى إرتباط كل من النموذج الأخلاقي الإسلامي والنموذج الأخلاقي الغربي بمبدأ الحلال والحرام ومبدأ الصواب والخطأ حيث ترتبط الأخلاق الإسلامية بالدين وتنبع من القرآن والسنة وبالتالي فإن تقييمها والحكم عليها يرتبط بالحلال والحرام فعقوق الوالدين مثلا فعل غير أخلاقي في كل المذاهب ولكنه أيضا حرام في الشريعة الإسلامية وكذلك السرقة والسكر والزنا والسب والظلم والأذى والاستغلال فمثل هذه المسائل وغيرها التي يدرسها علم الأخلاق تدخل ضمن دائراة الحرام في الإسلام وتندرج تحت الصواب والخطأ-أو على أحسن تقدير-الواجب في معظم مذاهب الأخلاق الغربية الوضعية.
