ينطوي الكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ على عدد من المقالات التي تتناول دراسة اللغة دراسة علمية، وتحاول أن تتفحص الجوانب المنهجية في هذه الدراسة، كما يدل عنوان المقال الأول. ثم تنتقل إلى دراسة ما ليس بعلم اللغة، أي معاينة الدراسات القديمة، التي وإن كانت تعنى باللغة، فهي لا تنتمي لعلم اللغة بمعناه الحديث، بل لعلوم أخرى لا تقوم على منهجية علم اللغة. ويتناول المقال الثالث فحص الخطوات المنهجية التي اتبعها فردينان دي سوسير بوصفه مؤسس علم اللغة الحديث. وتنتهي بمقالة إدوراد سابير عن مكانة اللغة في تكوين المنظور الثقافي للعالم عند الناطقين بها.
