هذا الكتاب يلتمس في حياة الفنان وأعماله أطيافا من دلالات وملامح، لا يدعي القبض على المعنى الأخير، ولا يؤمن بإمكانية ذلك، كما لا يؤمن بوحدانية الحقيقة في التجربة. الدراسة هنا تتخير الرحيل مع حياة الفنان، بيئته وأعماله، مصغيا بمجموع معارفه وخبراته، ملتمسا ظلالا من كشوف ورؤى، مستجيبا لدعوات وإيحاءات. إذ في النتيجة، مهما كثر النقاد والقراء، ومهما تعددت النظريات والمناهج، فإننا متى وقفنا أمام العمل الفني التشكيلي وأيا كان غنى الزاد، نكتب مشاهداتنا واستجابتنا. فالممارسات والمناهج والنظريات تغني رؤية المشاهد بلا ريب، لكنها لا تلزمه بخطط وإجراءات محددة، بل يفترض فيها أن تفسح في المجال لخصوصية رؤية المشاهد، ونوعية حساسيته وتعدد زوايا النظر، لا أن تقيدها، لأن الرائي قطب فاعل في الرؤية ومتدخل.
