يعتبر مفهوم الثقافة ملازما للعلوم الاجتماعية، وهو ضروري لها إلى حد ما، للتفكير حول وحدة البشرية من خلال التنوع بشكل يختلف عن التفكير المستند إلى البيولوجيا. ويبدو أن هذا المفهوم يقدم أكثر الأجوبة إقناعا على عن سؤال الفارق بين الشعوب، وذلك لأن الجواب العرقي» أخذ يفقد من قيمته شيئا فشيئا مع تطور علم الوراثة البشري. الإنسان بالأساس كائن ثقافي. وعملية التحول الطويلة إلى إنسان التي بدأت قبل عشرة ملايين سنة، انطوت في جوهرها على الانتقال من التكيف الوراثي مع البيئة الطبيعية إلى التكيف الثقافي. وعبر مسيرة ذلك التطور الذي أدى إلى نشوء الإنسان العاقل أي الإنسان الأول، تراجعت الغرائز تراجعا كبيرا، وحلت الثقافة تدريجيا محلها وهو التكيف الذي تمكن الإنسان من السيطرة عليه.
