يهتم الكتاب بإشكالية الفكر وما يتصل بها، والأسئلة المثارة حولها في سياقها التاريخي والثقافي، ليمهد الطريق للاطلاع على طبيعة الخطاب الفكري والثقافي المعاصر، واستقراء المشكلات الفكرية التي انطوى عليها في مسيرته، ومعرفة حدود معالجاته للمشكلات التي ظل يعانيها المجتمع السوداني من المنظور السياسي والأيديولوجي، والمشكلات التي ترتبت عن ذلك. وبظهر هذا البحث أن الموقف الأيديولوجي ظل يطبع الأفكار المنتجة حول قضايا الثقافة بطابعه؛ ومن بينها قضية الهوية، وكانت فاعليته كبيرة في طرائق تمثل النصوص الثقافية المختلفة إلى الدرجة التي أصبح فيها العقل خاضعا لسلطة الهوية في مقارباته ومنتوجاته، وفي تحديد المعاني والدلالات، وعدم القدرة على تحديد موقف فكري يضع حدا للإشكاليات المتجددة مثل قضايا الهوية الحضارية والثقافية، أو قضايا الديمقراطية والحريات وغيرها، وهو ما استوجب ضرورات النقد، والتفكيك وفق أساليب علمية.
