يستهل المؤلف كتابه هذا بعرض موسع عن مفهوم تاريخ الرياضيات ودواعي الاهتمام به، وكيف أدت بحوث بعض المؤرخين في هذا المجال إلى الوقوف على ضعف الأطروحة التي كان أسلافهم يتبنونها حول كيفية تطور هذا العلم، وإلى مراجعة هذه الأطروحة والإقرار بدور علماء الحضارة العربية الإسلامية في تطوير وإثراء بعض فصول الرياضيات وفي ابتكار أبواب أخرى في هذا العلم. ثم يتناول الكتاب أهم إسهامات الحضارة العربية الإسلامية في هذا العلم، فيعرض بإسهاب «الحساب التوافيقي» و«الجبر» من حيث هما مثالان لما استحدثه رياضيو الحضارة الإسلامية، ويبحث في المثلثات العددية ورياضيات المتناهيات في الصغر من منطلق أنهما مثالان لما قدمته الحضارة العربية الإسلامية من إضافات على مستوى المحتوى والمنهجية، وقد اعتمد صاحب الكتاب مراجع محكمة في بحثه هذا، مثل ما نشره مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية من أعمال الرشدي راشد أهم روافدها.
