تدور أحداث هذه المسرحية الملهاوية حول بطلة تدعى السيدة هدى أنعم الله عليها بالثراء فكانت تملك ثلاثين فدانا من الأراضي وهو الأمر الذي دفع الرجال بالتزاحم حولها من أجل الزواج منها وفي كل مرة كانت تتزوج بواحد منهم إذا به ما يلبث أن يلقى ربه قبلها حتى قدر الله لواحد منهم أن يحيا إلى أن ماتت هي وقد ظن هذا الرجل بالفعل أنه أصاب منها الثراء إلا أنه ما لبث أن اكتشف بعد ذلك أنها أوصت بجميع أمولها لجهات البر وبعض صديقاتها فجن جنونه وقد سعى أمير الشعراء أحمد شوقي جاهدا من خلال هذا العمل المسرحي إلى إبراز هذا العيب الأخلاقي والانحراف الاجتماعي المتفشي في المجتمع المصري آنذاك.
