أقدم لويس ألتوسير يوم 16 نوفمبر 1980 على قتل زوجته نتيجة نوبة جنون حادة. كان ذلك الحدث هو النقطة المفصلية في حياة فيلسوف نذر حياته الدفاع عن القضايا العادلة ليجد نفسه في النهاية، أمام قضية من نوع آخر، قضية الفيلسوف القاتل والمتهم بقتل أقرب الأشخاص إليه. ظل لويس ألتوسير فترة في المستشفى، ليجد نفسه بعد مغادرته أمام كوابيس من نوع آخر، يقول ألتوسير إن هذا الكتاب هو فرصته الأخيرة للنجاة من ذلك الكابوس، لهذا ألف هذا الكتاب على أمل أن يتخفف ولو قليلا من صورة زوجته \"هيلين\" وهي تحتضر بن يدي فيلسوف، في فترة زمنية تحتضر فيها الأفكار والمفاهيم والأيديولوجيات والقضايا العادلة، هذا الكتاب ليس محاكمة فيلسوف لنفسه فحسب وإنما هو مرافعة طويلة لإدانة قرن من المفاهيم والأفكار والصراعات الأيديولوجية التي لا تنتهي.
