يمتد إقليم الباسك في كل من فرنسا وإسبانيا، ويضم هذا الكتاب منتخبات من حكايات شعبية مدهشة من الجزء الإسباني من الإقليم. حكايات من جميع أراضي الباسك في جزئه الإسباني. جمع الباسكيون عبر تاريخهم مجموعة من التقاليد الأسطورية الأمومية، والتي اندمجت فيما بعد مع أخرى ساهمت بها الشعوب التي مرت عبر أراضيهم، ومنهم السلتيون والرومان والقوط والعرب، بالإضافة إلى الحجاج الأوروبيين على اختلاف مشاربهم وأذواقهم. جمع هذه الحكايات باحثون مختلفون، وأعاد صياغتها وتدوينها لنا الروائي والشاعر والباحث الفلكلوري الباسكي خوان كروث، وهو الأديب والمختص بالآداب الشفاهية والفلكلورية لبلاده، وقد استند فيها بشكل خاص إلى تلك الموسوعات الكبيرة التي دونت في نهايات القرن الـ 19 وبدايات القرن الـ 20.
