يحاول مؤلف الكتاب نزع هذا الجانب الأسطوري عن شخصية فرويد التي شغلت وما زالت تشغل العالم، وهو يتتبع محطات حياته منذ ولادته في براغ ضمن أسرة يهودية، ثم هجرته إلى فيينا حيث درس الطب، وبعدها انتقاله إلى التحليل النفسي. ويعرض الكتاب وثائق وشهادات تؤكد ما ذهب إليه صاحبه، ويشير إلى أن أسرارا كثيرة في حياة فرويد ستبقى مطوية بسبب منع الاطلاع على الوثائق الموجودة في مكتبة الكونغرس الأمريكي التي يمكن أن تتضمن معلومات أكثر أهمية. هناك إشارات واضحة إلى وجود اكتشافات نسبها فرويد إلى نفسه وهي في الأساس لغيره ويذكر عددا من العلماء الذين سرق فرويد اكتشافاتهم ونسبها إلى نفسه أمثال شوبنهور، ونيتشه وغيرهما. كتاب مثير يحرض فينا الفضول المعرفي ويدفعنا إلى إعادة النظر في قناعات كثيرة سلمنا بها سابقا.
