يسلط هذا الكتاب الضوء على ممارسات دينية اتسعت ضمن منعطفات تاريخية وثقافية وروحية، إذ حاول اتياع تلك الأديان والمذاهب السرية البحث عن أجوبة لمجموعة من الأسرار الغامضة التي عجزت الرهبة التعبدية عن كشفها وطرحها خشية من الاتهام بالإلحاد، بالرغم من أن الشك هو الخطوة الأهم في طريق الإيمان، البعض من هذه الأديان بشرت بها ودعت لها شخصيات روحية، بعدما تلقت وحليا من الخالق، مثلما أدعت، وفي أديان أخرى كان الوعي الإنساني والتجارب الذاتية والصحوة الروحية هي الدافع للتبشير بها، وتنتشر هذه الأديان والمذاهب في الغالب، على مساحة تبعدية محدود قياسا إلى الأديان الرئيسة أو الكبيرة، لهذه انحسرت في فناء روحي ضيق مبتعدة عن الواجهة، لتنتشر حولها الكثير من الخرافات والأوهام والاتهامات، وأغلب الدراسات التي شملتها كانت متحيزة ضدها، لهذا حالت دون معرفة حقيقة جوهرها.
