تتبع هذه الرواية قصة ليل سوكولوف، يهودي سلوفاكي، تم سجنه في معسكر “أوشفيتز بيركيناو”. وعندما وجد آسروه النازيون الألمان أنه يتحدث لغات متعددة، أجبروه على أخذ وظيفة رسام الوشم في المعسكر، ما يعني أنه يجب على سوكولوف كتابة رقم تعريف كل سجين جديد يدخل إلى المعسكر على ذراعه. هذه الوظيفة جلبت لسوكولوف الأمن، لأن النازيين كانوا ينظرون إليه على أنه مفيد أكثر من باقي الأسرى، وعلى سبيل المثال، كان سجانوه يعطونه طعاما أكثر من رفقائه المساجين، ومقصورة شخصية لينام فيها خارج غرف الاحتجاز المزدحمة، واستعمل سوكولوف وظيفته ليؤمن احتياجات السجناء الآخرين مخاطرا بحياته من أجل زملائه. وفي أثناء عمله يلتقي ليل بفتاة تدعى غيتا، تأتي إليه للحصول على وشم رقمها في يومها الأول في معسكر الاعتقال، ويقع في حبها. تسلط الرواية الضوء على مواضيع البقاء والإيمان والحب والتضحية، وكان استخدام موريس قصة حب غيتا وليل كأساس لهذه الرواية كافيا لتعويض ضعف كتابتها.
