يتناول الكتاب في الباب الأول نشأة علم المغازي على أيدي الصحابة-رضي الله عنهم وأثر القرآن الكريم في أعتنائهم بالتاريخ . يتحدث الباب الثاني عن أجيال التابعين ممن روى المغازي. أما الباب الثالث فكان عن دور أشهر أهل التدوين في تثبيت الأسناد وفي الجزء الثاني من الكتاب يتحدث البكري عن المغازي وأمتداد مرحلة الأسناد وبداية مرحلة التصنيف وهيكلة التصنيف.
