إن النص الذي نقدمه للقارئ العربي، ترجمة وتقديما نص نفيس ليس للقارئ العربي عهد لا بمضامينه ولا بأسلوبه الفريد فهو يختلف كل الاختلاف عما روج من فكر دو سوسير اللسانياتي من خلال كتاب المحاضرات في اللسانيات العامة المنسوب إليه. إن كتاب \"في جوهري اللغة\" متقدم على كتاب المحاضرات في اللسانيات العامة، لكنه في الآن ذاته متأخر عليه. إنه متقدم عليه من حيث النظر إلى تكوين فكر دو سوسير اللسانياتي و السيميائياتي، إذ على الرغم من اختلاف الباحثين الطفيف في فترة تحريره من قبل دو سوسير فهو في كلتا الحالتين سابق على فترة المحاضرات التي ألقاه دو سوسير فيما بين سنتي 1907 و1911، بجامعة جنيف. ويعد هذا الكتاب مرحلة مهمة من مراحل مشروع دو سوسير الرامي إلى مراجعة الأصول العلمية التي يجب أن تنبي عليها اللسانيات، ومن ثمة نفهم وصفه لهذا الكتاب.
