هذا الكتاب الهجائي من تأليف أبو عثمان الجاحظ على شكل رسالة يخاطب فيها صاحبه أحمد بن عبد الوهاب بأسلوب ساخر يذكر فيه عيوبه وصفاته غير الحميدة، والحقيقة أن الجاحظ استعمله كأنموذج لنقد خصائل المجتمع المتفشية في ذلك الزمن، مثل : الأنانية والطمع وحب الذات وادعاء المعرفة العلمية، وتختلف هذه الدراسة عن ما صدر سابقاً من تحقيقات لأنها استندت إلى المرجاع الأصلية وآراء نقدية سابقة مثل معجم الأدباء لياقوت الحموي ومروج الذهب للمسعودي، فضلاً إلى تعليقات أبو الفرج الأصفهاني وغيرها.
