كتب ديدرو هذا الكتاب في عام 1747، والذي يتحدث عن حوار بين ربوبي وملحد وتوحيدي حول طبيعة الإلوهية فيعطي الربوبي الحجة في التصميم، ويقول المتحد بان تفسير الكون أفضل في الفيزياء والكيمياء والمادة والحركة، أما التوحيدي فيقول بأن الوحدة الكونية للعقل والمادة يتشاركان ويضمنان الكون، وهو الله. بقي هذا العمل من دون نشر حتى عام 1830، وذلك بسبب مصادرة الشرطة المحلية للمخطوطة أو إجبار ديدرو بالتعهد بعدم النشر.
