منعت هذه الرواية في اليابان حتى العام 1984، ولم تترجم إلى ... العربية أبدا، عمل تاكيجي كوباياشي بهذه الصفحات على نقل أبشع ظروف العمل التي يصعب التفكير بها؛ إذ قاربت العبودية. هذه الأحداث ليست نادرة أو فردية، بل هي حقيقة قائمة وظلت في بلد مثل اليابان لسنوات طويلة حتى بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية : ملامح الرواية أشبه بأي معمل بعد الثورة الصناعية حين كان العامل هو أرخص المكونات، والحقيقة كذلك ففي زمن تتم التضحية بسفينة تحمل أربعمئة عامل الحماقة مديرها ولا تنقذ بعد سماع إشارة S.O.S لتعنت المدير الآخر، فالأمر يصبح جريمة موصوفة. طوال الرواية يتم تخويف العمال البسطاء الجهلة بالبعيع الأحمر ومخاطر البعبع الأحمر وكل من ينتقد ظروف العمل هو روسي شيوعي كاره للإمبراطور والوطن يستحق الإعدام.
