تعد سيرة الأمير حمزة البهلوان أو حمزة العرب من أوائل السير الشعبية العربية التي رفعت من قدر العرب ونضالهم من أجل تكوين دولتهم المستقلة، فهي سيرة كتبت بالأساس كي ترد على عنصرية بعض الأجناس تجاه العرب، كما ترجع أهميتها لما تتضمنه من محاولة لتأريخ الامبراطورية العربية / الإسلامية وفق رؤية شعبية وأسلوب روائي شيق، تحوي السيرة موضوعا رئيسا يتمثل في فكرة وحدة القبائل العربية رافضة حال التشرذم التي كان يعيشها العرب حينذاك، ما جعلهم خاضعين للفرس وهدفت تلك السيرة إلى تنبيه الفرس إلى أن للعرب دولة موحدة، وبطولة حمزة بشخصيته الخيالية ليس لها وجود تاريخي، وإن كان هذا لا يمنع أن تكون هناك شخصيات أخرى قد حملت هذا العبء البطولي نفسه، غير أن الخيال الشعبي قد منحها الكثير من الروح الأسطورية.
