الكتاب يحكي عن الجذور التاريخية لنشأة كرة القدم منذ القرن الرابع عشر، وربما ما قبل ذلك، إلى أن تطورت للشكل الحالي كصناعة كبرى تتدخل فيها السياسة بوجهها القبيح أحيانا، كما يشرح الكتاب أيضا كيف كانت الكرة وسيلة لمقاومة العنصرية والتمييز على أساس الجنس، وكيف تم توظيفها كأداة لخدمة نازية هتلر وفاشية موسوليني، كما يحكي عن لاعبين قتلهم هتلر عقابا على مواقفهم السياسية، ويروي الكتاب كذلك عن كرة قدم كسلاح استخدمته الجزائر للتخلص من المستعمر الفرنسي، وكطريق نضال للشعب الفلسطيني في مواجهة الاحتلال، وفي الفصل الأول من الكتاب نكتشف أن ذكر كرة القدم جاء للمرة الأولى تاريخيا مرتبطا بشكل وثيق بإرساء النظام العام.
