هذا الكتاب هو رواية جانبية مشوقة لحدث استكشافي قـام بـه عالم الآثار الألماني كوفمن الفرانكفورتي حين كان ينقب في موقع تاريخي يعود لبدايات العصر المسيحي في مصر في شمال صحراء مصر الغربية غربي الإسكندرية، اصطحب كوفمن معه مؤلف كتابنا هذا؛ ابن عمه إيفالد فالس الذي لن نجد له دورا ملموسا في الكشف الأثري، لكنه سيروي لنا في المقابل القصة التي رافقت ذلك الحدث، فتحدث قليلا عن الآثار وأكثر في عرض المكان وأهله وتفاعل البيئة والإنسان في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر ومطلع القرن العشرين.
