فهذه الرواية إدانة شجاعة للحرب بآلامها وويلاتها ونتائجها المدمرة لرغبة الحياة ؛ لأن الحرب موت بصورة أو بأخرى، موت جسدي ونفسي حتى لو كانت النتيجة انتصارا. كأن هذا العمل الذكي تذكير استثنائي بما قاله زهير بن أبي سلمى (وما الحرب إلا ما علمتم وذقتم)، وما قاله تولستوي في روايته \"الحرب والسلام\" ؛ ولعل تناول الرواية لموضوعة المحاربين المرتزقة يعد امتيازا لها : فالمرتزقة يعانون الموت في الحياة ويعانون الموت في الحرب، فيتقون الجوع بالموت. وتلك لعمري مأساة إنسانية كبرى مسكوت عنها.
